Duffel Bag Hottie Releases Second EP from Prison

Buffalo's own Duffel Bag Hottie just dropped his second EP, and the story behind it is one of real, raw hip-hop. This man raps his verses from prison, straight over the phone. Now that's a dedicated artist! Duffel Bag Hottie, one of the OG signings at Black Soprano Family Records, has already released quite a bit of work: three full-length albums, five mixtapes, and now his second EP. And for those who don't quite have his body of work down yet, jot these down in your salty notebook: 'Ghost of Rick James' is a true classic, and also the 'Max Julian' trilogy brings bangers you really shouldn't miss. Surprise: he is also taking the dance floors by storm.

This EP kicks off with a trap track that immediately tells us that Duffel is still the flyest in the game while getting unexpected visits from ladies. "Live from USP Canaan" takes us into the cold reality of a high security prison in Pennsylvania, where he currently resides. On "Feel that Pain," Fuego Base, his label mate, jumps in as the only feature on this entire EP. The two cuts are a sampling feast in which they let us know that they only go into the club when the stacks are moving. Then we have "Winter Time in NY," a track that takes us to the jet black and freezing winters in his home state of New York.

"Story Time Duff" stands out for his dope chipmunk soul vibe. He drops references to greats such as 10-time WWE world champion The Rock and 16-time champion John Cena. Duff talks about how Cena sold his soul to The Rock in Toronto. Such a crazy twist can only add extra salt to the hip-hop game! The track "Heats" closes with a promise to keep us updated on what's going on in his life.

Some critics whine about the quality of his vocals because they were recorded from prison. But let's face it, Ol' Dirty Bastard did the same thing for Wu-Tang Clan's legendary album "The W. That Duffel Bag Hottie is going the same route keeps his bars authentic and his flow unchanged, like those good old days.

We give this EP a fat 7/10. We are curious to see what else this man has in store once he is free. Could he possibly drop another project that could match 'Ghost of Rick James' in terms of consistency? If it were up to us, we'd certainly like to see that happen.
